The Mountain Home Center Story

Jul 9, 2020 | Our Story

Mountain Home Center was opened on May 16, 1989 at 10948 Brockway Rd to founders and Truckee residents Geoff LeClair and Karen Mills. The building had previously been a restaurant before it became the home of Mountain Home Center from 1989 to 2006. The location is now Cedar House Sport Hotel & Stella Restaurant.

In the early days of Mountain Home Center, showroom space and sales were mostly dedicated to woodstoves and spas. Serving a mountain population that relied heavily on wood for fuel.

Ownership changed in 1998 when present owners Tom and Alissa Just, and Skip and Lin Stahmer joined Karen and John Mills in partnership. The growth of Truckee, the explosion in housing and construction meant growth in all categories including the addition of outdoor patio furniture and expansion into gas fireplaces and stoves. Continued growth created a need for a larger location. In 2005 the present location at 11403 Brockway Rd was conceived and constructed. The vision was to create a premier showroom for fireplaces, stoves and hot tubs indoors and an equally impressive outdoor showroom for patio furniture, umbrellas, barbecues and firepits.

Today you’ll find more than 40 fireplaces and stoves ready to ‘burn’ on the showroom floor, giving customers an actual sense of heat, flame, aesthetic possible. From traditional to the most contemporary linear fireplaces on the market, our showroom is the leader in inspiration.

Likewise, the hot tub area of the showroom houses the various sizes, styles, configurations offered by Hot Spring Spas. One of the things that may surprise customers, is our test soak area. Before you buy you are invited to ‘test soak’. You will experience the jets, the lights, the wellness of a salt-water system personally before selecting the hot tub that is right for you.

Wander around our outdoor patio, sit, swivel and lounge in any of our outdoor furniture collections on display. You will find everything from classic Adirondacks in green-built sustainable materials, to teak, to long-lasting wrought iron, contemporary aluminum and woven chairs and sectionals. The possibilities are endless for creating your outdoor retreat.

This is due to the incredible HARD WORK that our team exhibits every day. It brings us joy to hear that Mountain Home Center is the only place you want to work with!”

For Alissa Just, it’s about being able to give back and help support the many amazing Truckee/Tahoe area non-profit organizations. She said, “The non-profits are responsible for making this area desirable to visit, work, play and live in. With the support of local businesses, like ours, these organizations are supported and more able to provide their valuable services. We truly believe ‘it takes a village,’ and Mountain Home Center at its core is committed to helping each other and our community to be the best it can be.”
